Connect with the Independent Living Program
If your child wants to live on their own, in a group home in the community, or with you, they can get services to help them learn to live more independently.
Louisiana Rehabilitation Services (LRS)is a state office that helps people with disabilities reach their independent living goals. One of their services is the Independent Living Program.
What does it offer?
- People to help your family member find housing that fits with their needs, abilities, and preferences.
- Services that help them live as much on their own as they can handle. These include training, peer support, advocacy, and home skills.
To qualify for this program, a person must:
- have a significant physical, mental, cognitive, or sensory impairment that keeps them from being able to live fully on their own
- be able to improve their independent living skills with this support

How to Apply for the Independent Living Program
An Independent Living Specialist will work with your adult child or family member to see if they qualify for services. A note from your child's doctor would be helpful, but is not needed to apply.
