Keeping a good relationship

If your child is a preteen or teen, having a strong relationship with family members will help them through the challenges of adolescence.

Images of friends holding hands, a woman playing guitar, a person hiking, a tent, movie tickets, and movie popcorn.

Here's what you can do:

  • Do things together that your child enjoys.

  • Help them to pursue their interests and talents.

  • Encourage them to communicate their needs and thoughts.

  • Make sure they know that you understand and support them. Be a trusted ally for them, always.

As we said before: Kids with autism spend a lot of time being very aware of how different they are.

Doing their things together like this can help them be happy about who they are. It can help you know them a little better.

And best of all, it can create that strong personal bond that is so important for all of us!
