Find a babysitter you can trust

It's okay to need a break every now and then! In fact it's really important!

You and your family need to be able to go out and do the things you want to do. Sometimes this means finding someone you trust to take care of your child for a few hours.

Why is it important?

  • Spouses and partners need time together — this will help them be strong parents.

  • Siblings need their own time with parents — otherwise they can start to resent their sibling.

  • Families need to be part of their community — this will give them support.

How to find the right person?

  • Ask around for suggestions from people who know your child. Ask therapists and teachers. Ask any service agencies you are working with.

  • Read this blog from a parent who has been there: 5 Tips for Finding a Babysitter for your Child with Special Needs. (It will open in a new tab on your screen.)

  • Try this website: Care.com. Choose "Special Needs Provider" and enter your zip code.

Respite services can help!

  • A trained caregiver will look after your child for a period of time.

  • A respite caregiver can come to your home, or your child can stay at a respite center.
