Here's what you need to do
There are 2 parts to applying for Medicaid:
-
First you have to see if your family member qualifies. They call this "determining eligibility". The first step is to fill out an application and submit it.
-
If you qualify, then you enroll in one of the 6 health plans (MCOs).
You can apply online, by phone, by mail, or in person. If you can apply online, it might be faster.
-
Go to this webpage and follow the instructions. You'll have to create an account to do the application online, but it is free.
-
Submit an application by mail.
This can be complicated! If you have questions about enrolling in a health plan, call: 1-855-229-6848
If you qualify, enroll in one of the 6 health plans:
-
Aetna
-
AmeriHealth Caritas Louisiana
-
Healthy Blue
- Humana (new choice since 2022!)
-
Louisiana Healthcare Connections
-
UnitedHealthcare Community Plan
Healthy Louisiana may have to choose an initial plan for you, but you have 90 days to change to a different plan if you want.
After that, you will be able to change only during the open enrollment periods each year.
You will get 2 health insurance cards:
- 1 for Healthy Louisiana: This shows that you are a Medicaid member.
- 1 for your Health Plan: This is what you show at your doctor appointments.
