First, know that there is help for your child and support for you as a parent.
You are not alone!
Things to know first:
-
Special education services are specific teaching techniques and therapies that help children learn despite their disability.
-
These services are guaranteed to children from ages 3-21 if they have a disability that affects their learning. They have to get an evaluation to see if they qualify.
-
The school has responsibilities.
-
You and your child have rights.
-
These are protected and required by a law called IDEA: the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.
The goal is to work in partnership with the school to create a plan that will support your child's needs.
We'll tell you about the whole process, whether you are just starting out or are already getting services.
