Look into other benefits and programs
Once you have an idea what kind of living situation might be best for your child, look for programs to help them transition.
Remember, the websites linked below will open in new tabs on your screen.
Here's what you can do:
- Talk to your school IEP team about the next steps. There are sometimes transition counselorswho can tell you about options for housing and other services.
- If your child has Medicaid, learn about Louisiana's Medicaid Waivers. These are sets of services for adults with disabilities that can help to support their needs when they are done with school. See the Exceptional Lives Medicaid Waivers Guide to learn more.
- If your child will need help making some decisions as an adult, look into Guardianship options. See the Exceptional Lives Decision-Making for Adult ChildrenGuide to learn more.
- Use the Social Security Benefits Eligibility Screening Tool to see if your child qualifies for other state and federal benefit programs. You can also use our Exceptional Lives SSI Benefits Guide to find out if your child qualifies for SSIbenefits.
